Week of the Young Child Recap: CAP Day and Mini-Conference

cap day picture

Each and every April, partners from all around the state celebrate Child Abuse Prevention month and Week of the Young Child. There are several ways to commemorate Child Abuse Prevention and Week of the Young Child. Smart Start Oklahoma and Reach Out and Read Oklahoma covered two trees in front of the Colcord building with royal blue ribbons to remind citizens that April is Child Abuse Prevention month. The ribbons represented the 11,418 counts of substantiated child abuse in FY2013.

On Tuesday April 8, Child Abuse Prevention Day (CAP Day) brought partners committed to preventing child abuse to the Capitol to rally for supporting the protection of Oklahoma children.  Smart Start Oklahoma and Reach Out and Read Oklahoma were both represented at this event, where we handed out information and promotional materials. Smart Start Oklahoma, through generous sponsorship of AEP/PSO, had Café Evoke’s coffee bar on the second floor, who served coffee and various coffee drinks throughout the morning.

After the CAP Day at the capitol, there was the CAP Day mini-conference at OU Children’s. The keynote address was delivered by Laura Porter, Director of Adverse Child Experiences ACE Partnerships for Comprehensive Health Education Foundation, who discussed in detail how the ACE Study impacts children, and how a parent’s early experiences can impact their child’s early development.

In part two, we will discuss our other exciting event that occurred during Week of the Young Child, Legislative Read Day 2014.
