Summertime & Our Role Models

With the recent celebration of Father’s Day, we want to recognize all of the dads, grandpas, uncles, and other wonderful men who embrace the Father Role. Your guidance, support, and love make a huge difference in the lives of children.

Summer is a great time for children to participate in fun, educational, and inexpensive activities with fathers and other role models. Here are some great summertime ideas:

  • · Visit the library: During the summer, libraries often have programs that encourage reading, provide story time, and allow for quiet reading time with children. Visit your local library website for more ideas.
  • · Go to a local park: Parks are great places to have fun and learn. There are many opportunities to experience science, develop language, and exercise. While tossing a Frisbee, talk about the movement of the Frisbee in the air (science) while expanding your child’s vocabulary by introducing new words (i.e., gliding, soaring).
  • · Watch a movie together: Beat the summer heat, stay indoors, and see a movie. A lot of movie theaters offer cheap or free children’s movies during the summer. Talk about the storyline of the movie and the characters. Extend the activity and encourage pretend play by acting out the scenes of the movie with your children later.  These types of activities are fun and support children’s language and literacy development.
  • · Do a cooking activity: Children love to help out in the kitchen. Summer is a great time to get them involved and encourage independence while developing math and reading skills. Read the recipe together, measure the ingredients, and let them do the dumping, pouring, and spreading.  Remember to set the timer!

You don’t always need a special planned activity. Everyday experiences can become special memories. Spending extra one-on-one time with children can make a lasting impression.

These are just a few suggestions of summer activities that can be done with children. Do some research and see what your city has to offer.  Have fun!
