CLICK for Babies: Raising Awareness for the Period of Purple Crying

Knitters, crocheters, and crafters are needed for a grassroots campaign across North America to make purple colored baby caps which will be delivered to families in November and December with the Period of PURPLE Crying Program. The due date for these caps are October 1, 2014.

The main goal of this initiative is to increase awareness of the Period of PURPLE Crying and help prevent the shaking and abuse of infants. The Period of PURPLE Crying is a phase in an infant’s early life where they cry much more, sometimes hours on end, and they are still healthy. Health officials find that the Period of PURPLE Crying is much more understandable to parents than its other name—colic.

Creating purple caps for newborn infants leaving the hospital with will hopefully remind parents that this is a normal time during their child’s life, that it is a temporary phase, and it will come to an end. CLICK for Babies also raises community awareness, as crafters will need to explain why they are creating so many purple baby caps.

This program also serves as a tool to make people aware of Shaken Baby Syndrome/Abusive Head Trauma (SBS/AHT). Most often, a caregiver shakes an infant during the Period of PURPLE Crying out of anger or frustration. It is a leading cause of death in child abuse cases, as about 30 per 100,000 children under age 1 suffer from shaken baby syndrome each year in the U.S, according to a study in North Carolina.

Crafters should create caps using any newborn baby cap pattern. Caps should be made using any shade of soft, baby-friendly purple yarn, be at least 50% purple in color, and free of straps, strings or other potential choking and strangling hazards. In November and December, your knitted or crocheted caps will be given to baby boys and girls.
